Greenock

Greenock

Greenock is on the southern shore of the Firth of Cycle - slightly west of Glasgow. The town has a four-mile waterfront surrounded by hills and is composed of both a bustling industrial area on the lower water side and a residential area with a 19th-century flavor on the higher land.

Attractions

Glasgow's top attraction, the Burrell Collection, was amassed by wealthy industrialist Sir William Burrell before it was donated to the city. It's now housed in a prize-winning museum in the Pollok Country Park. This idiosyncratic collection includes everything from Chinese porcelain and medieval furniture to paintings by Renoir and Cezanne.

Activities

  • Visit the granite cross above the town, a proud memorial to the French sailors who fought in the Battle of the Atlantic and lost their lives.

  • Enjoy a short ferry ride to the Scottish Highlands.

  • Explore the statue, scientific library, museum, and the Watt School of Engineering, Navigation, Radio, and Radar that all commemorate James Watt (discoverer of steam power) who was born in Greenock.

  • Travel to Glasgow and visit George Square, Glasgow's oldest public square, named after George III.

Food

Scottish fare features plenty of local game and roasted meats. Haggis is perhaps one of the better-known dishes. Fresh seafood is also popular, not to mention Scottish salmon. Shortbread is a traditional recipe of Scotland and should not be missed.

Currency

The pound sterling (GBP) is valid in both England and Scotland, but Scottish banks also issue their own banknotes. These are generally accepted in England, but if problems do arise, most banks will exchange Scottish currency for pound sterling hassle-free. Traveler's checks are widely accepted in banks, and credit cards can be used in most places.
